A good majority of young boys dream of growing up and becoming a professional athlete. Excelling at the highest level of their chosen sport and receiving the praise and accolades very few ever experience from the fans. Then there are the more cerebral types who while also may have athletic ability spend their time dreaming of being the one that calls the shots and sets up the plays, such was the beginnings of Yanni Hufnagel out of Scarsdale, NY. Mr. Hufnagel, who has been an assistant coach at some of the most prestigious schools in college basketball, spent time divising strategy and setting up plays using basketball figurines as a young boy. There was no doubt what his future would be.
Yanni Hufnagel devoured as many books on coaching basketball he could get his hand on as a child. Even at the young age of thirty he should still be considered a basketball lifer. An athlete in his own right, Yanni Hufnagel spent time playing lacrosse at Division 1 Penn State before transferring to Cornell and getting a head start on his future career as the manager for the basketball team. Soon after spending a summer internship working for the New Jersy Nets, Mr. Hufnagel was hired as a graduate assistant for the Oklahoma Sooners under head coach and former Duke Blue Devil player Jeff Capel. Coach Hufnagel went on from there to work as a volunteer assistant coach at Harvard where he oversaw the emergence of future NBA star Jeremy Lin who he still keeps in contact with. Yanni Hufnagel has taken that New York confidence with him and has gained the reputation as a top notch recruiter. Coach Hufnagel spent this past season as an assistant coach for the University of Nevada, helping to lead them to an NCAA tournament birth.
